Operating a Junior Camp

When working with junior members, there is a ton of risk in many areas of the operation. A junior can be an extremely profitable operation when run intelligently and efficiently while minimizing the risk and increase the fun. Junior camps are great things to have for all clubs, as they can keep membership interactivity high, and they create an atmosphere where kids like to be. This will also help the family spend more time at the club.

Hiring Practices

When hiring people to work with junior campers, there are numerous steps a club can take to reduce the risk of any implication. When choosing someone to teach the game of golf to young kids, there are a number of steps that a club can look take to ensure the health and safety of the junior players are kept in mind:

  • Criminal Background check
  • Sex Offender Registry check
  • Criminal Search Check
  • Work History and Address History
  • Food Allergies

When operating a camp for kids to come and enjoy, there is an inherent risk of the snacks and beverages being offered to the kids. Having a log of all allergies present within the group. This will reduce any inherent risk and ensure the health and safety of all attendees.

In locos parentis

The term in loco parentis, Latin for "in the place of a parent" refers to the legal responsibility of a person or organization to take on some of the functions and responsibilities of a parent. First, it allows caretakers to act in the best interests of the attendees as they see fit. It also provides a non-biological parent to be given the legal rights and responsibilities of a biological parent in certain emergency situations. (Rosen-Molina, 2007) This is essential for a camp’s personnel to understand. All personnel should keep the interest of the attendees first and foremost. All camp personnel should be required to know first aid, CPR, WHMIS and Health & Safety training.
